| History |
| A tiger used to be a symbol of cruelty and war in the medieval times, and that is why, the house - owners were ignoring it for a long time, when choosing their house symbols. It was European fashion of “café”, which broke this taboo and the first houses with this symbol appeared in Prague, first in Husova street, later on in Břetislavova and Haštalská street. The house in Husova street changed its symbol for several times - first it was a hoe in 15th century, a black lion for next hundred years, and a golden tiger since 1713. | ![]() |

| A history of the house in
Husova No. 17 dated back to 14th and 15th
century. Originally it formed a part of the building
complex, which included one of the most valuable
historical monuments in Prague - Palace of Lords of
Kunštát and Poděbrad.
Originally a citizen´s house was called “At Black Eagle”, “At the Digger” and “At the Kraft”. A gothic base with old cellars underwent reconstruction in Renaissance and Baroque style. Since 1702 the house has had its symbol - relief of marching tiger. City register from 1816 mentioned a brewery at this place. The popular Šoch´s or Šmiler´s national café existed here in the thirties. This café was serving as a reading-room, in which the Czech revivalists could read journals from abroad. It was regularly visited by Karel Hynek Mácha and Josef Kajetán Tyl, by historian František Palacký, Karel Sabina, František Ladislav Eelakovský and many others. After the café was changed into a beer restaurant, beer was drawn into crockery, black glazed measures. Beer was stored in deep cellars. The beer restaurant “U zlatého tygra” has kept its popularity also in the 20th century. Mr. Herriot, French prime minister visited it incognito, as he wished to see a typical Prague inn.
The beer restaurant “U Zlatého tygra” has kept is democratic tradition on in the after-war times. In its friendly arrangement of interior design (banks along the walls and tables with chairs) the most popular Czech actors and singers were enjoying their time. We could meet Zdenik Štipánek and Václav Bednáo here as well as Jan Werich ad Bohuš Záhorský. A prestigious Club of Zlatá Praha has reserved the table on the right of the entrance. The professions of its members range from graphic artists and sculptors (Bartoš, Udr?al, Zavadil), surgeons (Prof. Dungl, Petrus), economists (Cígler, Jandera, Jureeka) to the artists and philosophers (I. Mládek, Brada, Stach, Kohák, Dymák). Bohumil Hrabal, writer, was elected the life - long President of Zlatá Praha. His favourite place was back at the table, in front of the door to kitchen.
Hrabal, whose works were translated to 29 languages, spent the best part of his life at the Tiger. The restaurant served him as a meeting place, but particularly as his working place. Here he met many prestigious personalities, including President Clinton and President Havel. And we have to mention, that this is one of few beer restaurants in Prague, which has kept its original old-times atmosphere. It corresponds to the specific features of Prague hospitality and to the sense of cultural traditions of Czech nations, that this place is to be associated with the name of Bohuslav Hrabal, also in future (similarly like other literate centres in Prague, e.g. Café Arco, which was regularly visited by Kafka, Werfel and others, or these ones abroad, e.g. Hemingway´s Bar Daiquirí in Havana, Cafés in Latin Quarter in Paris, etc.).
Permanent decorations of the beer restaurant “U Zlatého tygra” and its graphic and spatial design will show the relations between the present generation of artists and Hrabal. It will be preserved for a long time, similarly like e.g. the decorations of the brewery “U Fleku”, lunette paintings at the restaurants “U Šuteru”, “U Bonaparta” in the Lesser Town of Prague, etc. |
